Zohran Mamdani: Biography

   

Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, to a family of Indian descent. He is an American politician from the state of New York. He is the winner of the 2025 New York City mayoral election and will begin his term as the 111th mayor of New York on January 1, 2026.


Zohran Kwame Mamdani's father, Mohammad Mamdani, is a professor of postcolonial studies at Columbia University. Zohran moved with his family to Cape Town, South Africa, at the age of 5 and attended St. George's Grammar School.
